Grants That Make Switching to an Electric Car Easier (and Cheaper)
Are you thinking about making the switch to an electric vehicle? The government can help! To encourage more drivers to make the switch from petrol to electric, the UK government and the Government of Ireland provide a variety of grants which help simplify the purchase of EVs and their charging stations. We’re here to break down who’s eligible, how to apply, what funding is out there, and the latest updates to national and local schemes.
The EV Charger Grant That Could Save You Money at Home: The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant (EVCG)
If you drive an EV and own a home with its own private driveway, scouting out a charger and getting one installed at home is pretty straight forward (and once your charger is installed you have full reign in taking advantage of programs like Co Charger to get the most out of your electrification journey)! But for homeowners who don’t have their own private driveway, the EV charging solutions available to you largely depend on whether you have adequate on-street parking. Whether a cross-pavement charging solution can be installed at your property will be decided by your local planning and highways authorities, or by private landowners if applicable.
If you’re a renter and thought switching to EV felt out of reach, we have some good news. The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant, which is available until March 31, 2026, was created to encourage more individuals – particularly renters – to switch to electric vehicles. You could claim up to £350/€300 for the purchase of a charger and its installation with the following grants:
In the UK:
1. Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for Households with On-Street Parking:
- Get 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, up to a maximum of £350.
- You can apply for this grant if you:
- Own or rent a residential property in which you live.
- Have adequate on-street parking as defined by your local planning and highways authority.
- Have permission from your local planning and highways authority to install a cross-pavement charging solution.
- Will install a cross-pavement charging solution before having your chargepoint installed.
2. Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for Renters and Flat Owners:
- You can get either £350 or 75% off the cost to buy and install a socket, whichever amount is lower.
- You must rent or have a shared ownership building with your own parking space on-site.
In Ireland:
SEAI Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant:
- Homeowners can apply for a grant of up to €300 towards the purchase and installation of a home charger. The application must be completed before installation begins.

Grants to Help UK Businesses Install EV Chargers
Whether you’re a small business, charity, or public sector organisation, the UK government offers two great grant schemes to make the switch more affordable. Perfect if you’re planning for future growth or want to support a growing EV fleet.
1. Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
This scheme offers a voucher-based grant to cover part of the cost of purchasing and installing EV chargepoints.
- Eligible parties are business, charities, or public sector organisations
- Claim up to 75% of the cost of the purchase and installation of EV chargepoints, capped at £350 per socket
- Valid for up to 40 sockets in total across all your sites
Note: There is a separate scheme for state-funded education institutions.
2. EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets
If you’re a small or medium-sized business (SME) with 249 employees or fewer, this grant goes even further helping you install the infrastructure needed for multiple chargepoints, now or in the future. Perfect if you’re planning for future growth or want to support a growing EV fleet.
- Eligible parties are SMEs (249 employees or fewer)
- Claim up to 75% of the cost for building and installation work — including things like cabling, posts, and site surveys
- The offer is capped at £15,000 per site
- Pro tip: This grant can be used alongside the WCS, just not for the exact same chargepoints.
